The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is the highest-ranking officer responsible for managing an organization. It is one of many “C-suite” roles within an organization.

The board of directors appoints the CEO of a corporation. The shareholders vote for board members, and the board ultimately hires the CEO. The CEO is also often the chair of the board of directors.

The CEO is responsible for all of the company’s business decisions and operations. Other important “C-suite” roles within an organization include the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Chief Operating Officer (COO), Chief Accounting Officer (CAO), and Chief Compliance Officer (CCO)
