President-elect Donald Trump just announced that he wants Billy Long, former congressman of Missouri, to lead the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

President Trump made the announcement on Truth Social, citing Mr. Long’s 30 years of experience in across business, real estate, congress, and as an auctioneer.

President Trump has been a vocal critic of government inefficiencies and waste. The IRS’ operating budget has steadily increased over the years, increasing from $13.5 billion in 2019 to $16 billion in 2023.

It is likely that President Trump has asked Mr. Long to review the IRS’ priorities, operating procedures, and budget, to try and cut costs and improve the perceived unfairness with the U.S. tax system.
